Yesterday, we as a church commissioned a group of nine Hope Creekers who are dedicating their time to serve with Freedom Global in Limuru, Kenya. Our team will be assisting Uhuru Girl's Academy move into a new and bigger campus, as well as assisting with a day camp for orphans and at-risk kids! In their new facilities, Uhuru Academy will be able to serve 80 more students per year—furthering their mission to help girls from impoverished families receive a quality education. Most importantly, they will be able to more effectively teach others about Jesus and reach more people with the Gospel! Our team leaves THIS Thursday (8/7) for a 10-day trip returning home on Sunday (8/17). Will you join us in prayer for this group as they embark on this mission? On Maundy Thursday, we remember Jesus' last supper with His disciples and the promises He made that changed everything. "When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.” After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among you. For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it,and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you."

It's the middle of Holy Week, when we observe the days leading up to crucifixion, death, and glorious resurrection of Jesus Christ. We are reminded this week of the incredible sacrifice Jesus made that ultimately conquered death and paid the penalty for our sins- and we invite you and your family to join with us in celebrating this joyous news on Sunday! How do you deal with anger? Anger can cause a lot of destruction, but it doesn’t have to. Last Sunday we saw how David got angry over personal insult and stress, and it led to overreaction and unwise judgement. What helped David steer clear of sinful anger? Time, community, perspective, and patience. We can rely on the promise that God will deliver justice. In the meantime, we have been called to love and forgive!

How do you handle stress? Last Sunday, we saw how David handled stress while being pursued by Saul, and it did not always go well. We saw David sinfully lying and taking matters into his own hands. However, the story doesn't end there. David made things right by repenting, waiting on God, and remembering his mission. When we rely on God instead of ourselves, we are better equipped for the stress and trials of life!

Last Sunday we celebrated Easter- a time of reflection on Jesus’ resurrection and why it is significant for our lives today. We saw that the resurrection confirms everything Jesus claimed about himself and everything He said He would do for us. It gives us hope in both life and death. It reminds us that following Jesus is the only wise choice. Because of the resurrection, we can hold fast to the promise that one day this life will be made right!

This past Sunday we started off our "Tale of Two Kings" series by taking a look at the circumstances that led King Saul to lose his throne. We see that Saul chose comfort and convenience over God’s mission, feared man more than he feared God, and minimized his sin instead of confessing it. Through it all, Saul lied, shifted blame, rationalized, defended, and feigned repentance. The prophet Samuel's advice to Saul is straightforward. Repent. Stop compromising. Receive God's pardon. Where have you been tempted to compromise your faith in your own life?

In the final week of our "Tighten the Knot" sermon series, we looked at common lies we need to avoid believing about marriage. These lies include the lie of finding "the ‘One’", that the grass is "greener" in other relationships, that chemistry is more valuable than character, that there are endless do-overs, that marriage can be an idol, that marriage is meant to make you happy, and that your marriage can't be saved. The truth is, both singleness and marriage are gifts from God. While the purpose of marriage is not happiness, it IS holiness. Why is this good news? Because holiness leads to soul level contentment and joy!

You don't need to be a Bible scholar to teach the Bible. In week 3 of our "Tighten the Knot" series on marriage, we looked at 2 Timothy 3:14-17 to see what the Bible has to say about parenting. We see that 3 of the "traps" parents fall into are those of decision vs. discipleship, isolation vs. participation, and self sacrifice vs. self fulfillment. Parents cannot force their children to follow Jesus, but they are called to spiritually train them by being an example of faith, a trainer of God's Word, and a sender of disciples!

Conflict is inevitable. What's important is how you handle it! In week two of our sermon series focused on marriage, we looked at how to communicate in a God honoring way. We see in Ephesians 4:25-32 the importance of being honest, rejecting sinful anger, knowing your spouse, and remember your position as one who has been forgiven by Christ. While conflict is unavoidable, we can manage it well because of Jesus' finished work on the cross!

What is the context of Biblical marriage? Mutual submission! Today we dove into Ephesians 5 to start off a new series all about marriage. The two roles within marriage, headship and submission, are often misunderstood. However, the Bible makes it clear that submission does not mean unconditional obedience to a dominant husband who makes every decision. Instead, submission is an invitation to be like Christ. In the same way, husbands are called to lead by loving reassuringly, sacrificially, exclusively, and steadfastly. The relationship between husband and wife should reflect Jesus and the Church!

Following Jesus without the church body is not an option that it available to us. In Romans 16, we get a glimpse of the diversity of the early church- as well as a warning to guard against false teachings that divide us! Teachings that reject Biblical truths, make the Gospel about something other than Jesus, or avoid the controversial teachings of Christ put up obstacles that keep us from knowing Jesus fully. Instead, we should acknowledge the truths about living in the Body of Christ; that loving others in unity is essential, we will always need connection with each other, and every member is a minister!

You always put on your Sunday best and flashed that smile! Join us Sunday as we wrap up our Romans series by studying the first church directory in history from Romans 16! Jesus did not try to accommodate people with a softer message with no conviction. In fact, without the revelation of our need for a Savior, our eyes can't be opened to the Gospel message! Much like parables, the Gospel must be revealed to those who hear it. We are not meant to be judges of the hearts of others, deciding who the Holy Spirit will reveal the Gospel message to or not. At the start of a brand new year, how is God compelling you to step out of your comfort zone and share with others?

Why does God call us to go all in with Him? Because He is worth it. He is worth it, and we need Him. In Matthew 1:18-25, we read about Joseph's role in the birth of Jesus, and his apprehensions. Marrying Mary meant facing the disdain of the world, giving up control, denying his flesh, and repenting of his sin. Despite these, Joseph went all in with God. His courageousness was rooted in the truths of God's character- He is a promise keeper and sovereign creator! How is God calling you to be courageous this week?

How easy it is for us to destroy the work of God over non-essential issues. How much stronger we are when we are united! In Romans 14-15:13, Paul discusses ways to handle conflict and division within the church. How do we do this well? By fighting for unity, avoiding uniformity, withholding judgement, prioritizing spiritual health over our freedom, being open to our conscience being stretched, and prioritizing mission.

Our responsibility towards the government as Christians can be a difficult conversation to have. However, we must remember that ultimately, God is in control! Paul shows us in Romans 13 that we are called to respect our governing bodies, submit to their authority, and to serve. At the same time, the government is called to demonstrate benevolent leadership and provide reasonable protection to the governed. While we show respect to our leaders here on Earth, we must remember that our allegiance to God comes first. Do you want to see God change the world? It starts with submission to Him and His Word!

Too often we think that sanctification comes from DOING good things for Jesus- when in reality, putting intimacy before activity is when that activity becomes truly fruitful! How do we do this well? By setting aside specific time to be with Jesus each day- reading from scripture and praying. Will you join us in a challenge? Take at least 20 minutes each day for the next 30 days to have an intimate time with Jesus. While we will face resistance, that time will be used mightily!

Where are you tempted to be someone you're not? As we continue our study of Romans, we see 5 distinct marks of Christian love. Christian love is authentic, uncompromising, familial, serving, and forgiving. How do we do this well? We need to start with having a right view of ourselves- which leads us to relying on the truth of the Gospel and on God's justice!

As followers of Christ, we have spiritual gifts that we are called to use to build up the Church. Paul shows us in the beginning of Romans chapter 12 that a healthy Church is one that knows who they are, who they belong to, and how they are gifted. Not all spiritual gifts are the same. In fact, when our different gifts work in harmony, the Church is unified as the Body of Christ!

God's ways are beyond our human comprehension, but we are assured that in every circumstance He is in control and He works all things for the good of those who love Him. In these passages, Paul defines worship as a way of life- marked by Scripture, full devotion, self denial, logic, grace, and awe of God. When we renew our mind by filling it with the truths of Scripture instead of values of the world, the result is an all-encompassing and continuous transformation!

How powerful this truth is! In Romans 11, we see how God's promises have not failed. He has preserved a remnant of His people, and isn’t done with them yet! This chapter points us to the truth that God still has future plans for His people. He is faithful, and His Word is true. Because of this, we can find hope in our present!

This is one of the 6 "Gospel Basics" we see in Romans chapter 10. We also see in this chapter that the Gospel isn't new, it must be received, it is universally available, it must be proclaimed, and that it comes with an inheritance. How comforting to know that what we gain from following Christ far outweighs what we lose! Who are you currently pursuing with the Gospel?

Why should we be burdened for the lost like Paul is? Because if the Church doesn't witness for Christ, no one else will. God has put us in the lives of specific people to be a light in ways no one else can be! God is sovereign and just. While we as humans prepare ourselves for destruction, He prepares us for glory. This truth should eliminate our pride and lead us to worship!

At the end of Romans 8, we see that God is for us- meaning that He is for our salvation, sanctification, joy, and flourishing. As followers of Jesus, nothing can separate us from His love! He will meet all of our needs. This truth can protect us from discouragement, and inspire us to stay on mission for making disciples. What reminders of God's goodness have led you to worship this week?

One of the unavoidable aspects of our lives here on Earth is that we will encounter suffering. Yet, even as we suffer, God's grace is sufficient! We have not been left alone. The Holy Spirit intercedes for us in prayer, leading us in a way that knows our needs better than we do. We can be assured that God promises to redeem our suffering. The best is yet to come!
